Dandelion Weed or Medicine?

Dandelion:  The Victim of Marketing.

You've been taught to believe that the dandelion
is the enemy of your yard, but is it?

So advertising will tell you this 'weed' has to be eradicated as the number one enemy of your yard.   If the dandelion had equal representation, the facts would change.  The bees and your body both love it.

When people ask what it does for the body, the answer is really what doesn't it do.  I say it's like eating carrots.  Your general health is boosted and improved, allowing your body to be supported to do the work it does naturally.

To be more specific, dandelion is loved by your liver.  It helps it detox which in turn allows your body to produce more glutathione which completes the cycle of helping you detox even more. Dandelion is a great contributor to creating more of the body's natural detoxification ability.

Dandelion is a great antioxidant, supports weight loss, assists with water retention and because it balances blood sugars it can assist with diabetes.  If you are detoxing heavy metals the glutathione support will make a difference.  Dandelion also assists with balancing candida in the gut.

You can buy dandelion as a capsuled supplement or dried herb, but pulling it straight out of your pesticide-free yard is the greatest reward.  Not only is it free, but it's satisfying to know that it is pure and homegrown.

You can eat the entire plant if it is to your liking.  That includes the leaves, the flowers and the root.  Some use it in salads and cooking.  Personally I just steep it for tea, using fresh or dried product.

With the power packed benefits of potassium, calcium and vitamins there is really no reason not to include it in your life.  The flavor of the leaves can be a bitter green flavor and teas are an earthy, very natural flavor.  Dandelion can be mixed with mint or another favorite tea, but no matter how you source it or use it, your liver will be grateful.

Yes you do need to remove those "silver" fillings!

People always ask the question, "Do I need to remove my amalgam filling before I start detoxing?"  The short answer is yes.  The next thing they says is that they cannot afford to have them removed.  The answer to that is...you can't afford not to have them removed.

Metals Poisoned and Crazy

Being heavy metals poisoned is bad
enough, but no one ever tells you
how crazy it feels.

Recovering from heavy metals toxicity is a nasty process.  There are not a lot of good things to say about it and still there are things we just DON’T talk about.  It’s time.

No one likes to  mention the hysterical moments where you just can’t cope.  That feeling of hanging on to threads while no one believes a word you are saying.  The anxiety of wondering if they don’t understand because of lack of empathy or that maybe you are just plain crazy.

If you haven’t been there, you are either very lucky or you are on your way.
It’s nightmarish and you have no where to go but back into your head where the craziness lives and roams to strike again.

When I talk to those metals poisoned they always confess how close to the edge they feel.  They always say they “feel crazy.”  Without hesitation it is easy to say, “That is because you are!  That is what metals do and that is how we all feel.”

You can’t imagine how happy they are to hear that they are crazy and that it is a place everyone of us has been.  Who knew there would be comfort in crazy, but it makes sense.

When you are dealing with an unknown like metals you are mostly on your own.  You are thrown into a position to have to learn about yourself and your body with no warning.  Likely the symptoms came on without introduction and the task had no instructions.  You probably didn’t even know what was wrong for years.  Combine that massive task with a medical system that is also wondering what to do next and it is like looking into a black hole.

I’m not hoping to give the answer or medical advice.  I just want you all to know that recovery from metals is hard.  You are a champion and when you are done you will know your body better than anyone has know themselves.

There is an end to metals recovery, but it won’t likely be a straight line.  You can listen to everyone and then, in the end, make all of the decisions for yourself.  We are rarely put in a position to have to trust ourselves so completely, but it is here.

You will strive.
You will struggle, and
You will win.

What is Prop 65?

                   What is Prop 65?

Is it just another message to be ignored
or does it mean something?

        Here is the short answer.

Proposition 65 is a California Proposition enacted by a ballot initiative.  Its proper name is The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986.  Although the Act is law only in the State of California, it often benefits others. The Proposition serves to  reduce the use of toxins below the limits imposed by the Food and Drug Administration, FDA.

Corporations interested in doing business in California abide by the law in a couple of ways.  #1 They may to reduce the toxicity of products, which is a benefit to all consumers and thereby not need to warn California consumers, and #2 They can label their products with the  Prop 65 warning so that they can sell with the same packaging globally.  This turns out to be a win for those outside of California, since most manufacturers would rather produce only one formula and one type of packaging, giving others the benefits of reduced toxicity and improved labeling.  The clue for consumers is that seeing the warning means there is definitely toxicity in the product.

Unfortunately, the Prop 65 warning label is often non-existent or so minute that it goes unnoticed.  Enforcement is not perfect.  To most who see the warning, it is just another post to be disregarded.  Even most Californians have little understanding of the Act.

If you are a person who is seriously limiting toxicity, finding Prop. 65 information is important.  For those sick, chronically ill or detoxing metals, the information can be vital to finding wellness.

If you find products, which include food, water, jewelry, medications, cosmetics, appliances, glassware, dishes, cooking utensils and more, with the label you are best to avoid it or get busy doing research.  You cannot depend on labeling for the full story.

Many products do not carry visible information.  If you absolutely need information, email companies and ask questions about toxicity.  If you hear that the company follows FDA guidelines, consider it a red flag.  That is not good enough, if you want to be sure the bar is lowered to at least California standards.   Ask corporations if there is a Prop. 65 warning on their products when sold in California.  Then be sure the answer it is put into writing.

To be sure, a Prop. 65 warning does not mean Non-Toxic.  It only means the standards are higher and toxicity is lower than mandated by the FDA.

NOTE:  The warning above was simple rice paper for making spring rolls.  There were only five ingredients, yet they carry enough toxicity to have come under scrutiny.

Yes, you can find a dentist that will tell you that your mercury fillings are harmless.  They might even say that removing them will cause more harm than allowing them to remain untouched.
Both are lies.

The American Dental Association still maintains that those silver, amalgam fillings, which all contain mercury, won't hurt you, but finally in the last few months, the FDA has decided that might not be true.  They have not taken a firm stand against putting mercury in the human body, but suggest that it might not be a good idea for the very young or pregnant.  Seriously, treat yourself like a pregnant woman and say no to storing mercury in your head.

Many people say, "I have amalgam fillings, I've had them for years and I'm fine."  The truth is you are not and cannot be fine.  Your body is storing what it cannot process.  It is that storage that is the unruly culprit of your ill health to come.  You are not unique.  Mercury damages all bodies.

Although I like to say that mercury can cause about any symptoms it chooses, these are some very common ones:

Symptoms of Mercury Poisoning
  • Immune System Damage
  • Kidney Damage
  • Neurological Disorders
  • Endocrine Disruption
  • Thyroid Malfunction
  • Cognitive Impairments
  • Delusions
  • Psychological Disorders
  • Nerve Damage
  • Tremors
  • Insomnia
  • Memory Loss
  • Headaches
  • Hearing Loss
  • Temporomandibular Join Disorder (TMJ)
  • Bowel Disorders (IBS)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Joint Pain
  • Candida Imbalance
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Palsy
  • Concentration Difficulties (Brain Fog)
  • Numbness and Tingling
  • Reproductive Dysfunction
  • Suicidal Ideations

If you need to know more about mercury there are finally some good resources, including this site.  The problem with finding 'good' information is that the governing agencies that approve and use mercury casually, claim its innocence.  Their stance controls Western medicine and you become confused by not being able to trust most medical resources.  This is one of those times where you must do your own research and present your case as fact.  Doctors will disagree with you and that is your signal to move on to a practitioner who truly knows the dangers of mercury and how to find wellness.

Coffee Maker Toxicity

Toxicity in a coffee maker?

Apparently it is not so uncommon.

I consider myself to be extremely careful about consuming poisons after nearly 40 years of dealing with metals toxicity, but when it came to buying a coffee maker I went right back to my old habits, never considering toxicity.  Although I did do extensive research, health was not a consideration until a savvy friend reminded me about the plastic parts in coffee makers and the dangers they can hold.  Even with the reminder, I failed to do the right research.

I bought a $300 unit, hoping for the best when it came to the use of plastic parts.  Then, as soon as I opened the box, there it was, right inside the lid was the California Proposition 65 warning.

If you are not from California you might not have heard of Proposition 65 and even if you are from California it may mean little to you.  Prop. 65, as it is called, involves higher standards for products and materials than the FDA requires.  This means that the amounts of poisons and toxicity is reduced if goods are sold in the State or it must carry a warning.  It is law only in California, but because manufacturers do not want to produce two types of goods, they often upgrade or tag all of their goods to comply with California law.

The Prop. 65 warning on my new coffee maker says out loud, “Buy at Your Own Risk.”  Even though the FDA thinks you will be fine, the State of California does not.  Meeting California requirements does not mean that the item is non-toxic.   It means only that the levels of toxicity have been lowered below the federal regulations.  The warning itself tells you that the product exceeds even California limits.  Truthfully, neither set of regulations will keep you as safe as it should.

So what does the warning apply to in the world of coffee makers?  It is yet, unknown.  I wrote the manufacturer to ask precisely what aspect of the machine do not comply with California law.  It is not easy to get an answer to such a question and will likely take days or weeks for a response.  If you go this route, the response needs to be in writing.  If you are told that the manufacturer complies with all FDA regulations, you are in trouble.  That is completely unsatisfactory and to a metals contaminated person, that answer is as good as a no.

Instead of waiting for the response, I’m making the grown up decision to return my luxury coffee maker because my health is a priority.  After years of illness, why would I intentionally put 2 to 4 cups of poison into my body each and every day?

If you are shopping, consider a few of these highlights of the decision making process.  All plastic parts contain toxicity.  This includes those plastic pods for single cup coffee makers.  Many will say they are BPA free and that is good because BPA is a known carcinogen.  The problem is that BPA was replace with a formula change and who knows what is in the replacement.  Heating plastic allows the toxicity to leach, so 180 degrees on plastic every day of your life might not be a great idea…even though everyone else is doing it.

Another concern is aluminum.  There is really no aluminum product that is fit for food service.  That includes aluminum foil and cans.   You are just giving Alzheimer’s the greatest of opportunities.

Then there is the issue of bacteria that can grow in coffee makers.  It never occurred to me, but it did to my savvy friend who knew that water lines can grow mold.  Then there are all of those dark, warm and wet spots that can easily harbor bacteria.  As it turns out there are studies that say your coffee pot and your bathroom might tie for bacteria growth.

Finally, there is coffee itself.  You really don’t need a dose of pesticide each and every day even if you are the picture of health.  Organic beans are the start of a safe cup of coffee.

The options seem to be stainless steel and lead-free glass.  That means pour over models, presses and percolators.
No bells.  No whistles.

Dental Implant Decisions for Those Mercury Toxic

1/14/2021

If your metals poisoning
was from dentistry, a decision about what to do
after amalgam removal might be in your future.

Can an implant be safe?

The decision to use implants for those metals poisoned can be a scary thought.  We worry about the possibility of more metals leaching toxicity into our bodies or the harboring of bacteria that can cause low-grade infections.

The reality is that most of us became poisoned through dentistry.  A mouthful of mercury laden, amalgam fillings usually means ongoing dental visits for repairs, removal and secondary fixes.  Emotionally  and financially we're drained.

In the end, the decision is yours and only your research will give you the answer.  I did my research and in the end chose a zirconium implant over titanium.  There was controversy among dentists and I will share that debate with you.

Both products are highly regarded.  Because titanium is stronger there is great cause to use them, especially in molars.  Zirconium does not have the strength of titanium, but it is a very successful product.

My IAOMT* dentist, who does not do implants was zirconium adamant.  My dentist doing the implant was in favor of titanium.  I finally asked why my IAOMT dentist preferred zirconium and he explained that although he does not install them, he does remove them for metals people who have shown a sensitivity to them.
That was Decision Made.

*An IAOMT dentist is a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology.  They have committed to using clean dentistry and do not use mercury.  Their practices include the safe removal of mercury fillings.

Counterfeit NBMI is still
being sold as the real thing

Today I was send an article authored by Dr. Sircus, dated 11/12/19.  He published what appears to be a very comprehensive report on Dr. Boyd Haley's NBMI metals chelator.  After reading the article I contacted the company to verify some key points.  My personal conclusion is that this article, although highly factual, may very well be nothing more than an advertisement for counterfeit NBMI.

Note:  NBMI has had several name changes over the years.  You may know it by Irminix, OSR or Emeramide.

The article states:
"Purchasing Information
Dr. Boyd Haley’s NBMI is available for those contaminated by mercury and other heavy metals. As of this date, it is available for compassionate use only. The application process can be lengthy for some countries and in others it is very simple or unnecessary. The product is currently provided for free with a fee of $750 for application processing.

A less expensive source ships from the Far East and the United States. Their price for 5/10/20g is USD150/220/350. Mob./Whatsapp/Telegram: +86 186 6823 5107 https://www.fandachem.com/ Use of a sensitive scale is suggested with use.

It was a patient of mine who highly recommended this source and put me back in touch with Dr. Haley and his excellent research, after many years of being out of touch. The chelation area of medicine is highly controversial, competitive and confusing but now I feel absolutely confident I am presenting the best and safest chelator".

My Emeramed source from the Board of Directors clearly tells me that Dr. Haley does not know the author and that the product, is without doubt, counterfeit.  They have documented reports of side effects, of which NBMI has zero.

My question has always been, why isn't the FDA stopping the trafficking of the counterfeit product in the USA.  Here is the response from Emeramed.

"We have repeatedly asked the FDA to do their job, but so far they have refused. They say since the product is labeled not for human consumption they can not do anything.  Boyd (Dr. Haley) asked if he could sell his product with the same label and they said they would put him in jail.

The compound may or may not contain any active ingredient. Boyd (Dr. Haley)  does get calls or how to take it and why they got sick etc.  The Company was sent an adverse reaction report from a person in the EU, but when he inquired as the source of the product he found out they were having adverse reactions to the fake OSR not our compound which remains classified as an unapproved drug and has not had even a single serious adverse reaction reported."

The article by Dr. Sircus clearly endorses the counterfeit product.  To clarify and reinforce, this is not NBMI, OSR or any derivative of Emeramed's product.  What you've heard about the Emeramed product being sold from China is simply untrue.

NBMI The Chemistry by Boyd Haley

Suffering the symptoms of mercury toxicity means
making important health decisions.  Most of us are not prepared to make those decisions on our own and Western medicine is just not prepared with the answers yet.
This overview, although lengthy, is delivered simply and in great detail.  It will explain a lot about mercury toxicity and why the use of NBMI will help.

If you are mercury poisoned, you have likely heard of Emeramed’s, NBMI,  It is the metals chelator that is currently in FDA trials and holds the most promise for those suffering the many symptoms of mercury toxicity.  Although the video is long and includes the science involved, it is explained simply and completely by Dr. Boyd Haley, the creator of the compound.

While the public waits for NBMI to become available, there are many other drugs provided as chelators.  None are as efficient or as effective and all have side effects that are serious and can be damaging to the body.

In contrast, NBMI, seems to be the right fit for all metals toxicity.  Although it has an affinity for mercury, it will chelate to other metals as they become available.  The fact that NBMI will not drop metals once they are chelated, is a huge factor in making a decision to use NBMI when it becomes available.  Other products can attach and drop metals back into the bloodstream, causing the side effects that began the initial symptoms.

Another very important difference between NBMI and other chelators is that NBMI exits the body via the colon and not the kidneys, thereby sparing your organs further damage.  NBMI crosses the blood brain barrier, which most other options cannot do.  Also, it does not deplete the body of essential minerals in the process of clearing metals.

As of this writing, NBMI is only available through compassionate use programs.  That option requires a medical doctor to apply to the FDA, or the equivalent counterparts in countries outside of the US.  The application process is involved and outside of the office visit scope for most doctors.  The application information is available at emeramed.com.

Your Spleen and Its Role in Detoxification

This article is by Jillian Levy and is reprinted from the
Dr. Josh Axe website.  It gives a complete overview of the spleen.  It is included here because most who have long term metals contamination have not avoided overworking their liver and lymphatic system.  The article explains how a spleen can enlarge and cause side effects like lethargy, inflammation and illness which are not uncommon symtpoms to those metals toxic.

We've all heard of the spleen, but not many really know where it is or what it does.  It turns out to be not just important, but vitally important to those recovering from metals poisoning.  The article tells you how to support your spleen, how it functions and how to heal it.

My real interest in finding my spleen came from my acupuncturist after an egg sized knot developed on the top side of my foot, above the arch.  I asked him to treat the sore spot on my foot and he explained it was not my foot, but my spleen that was reacting.  In an effort to Search for the Cause, Not Just the Cure, I'm going to try to remedy the problem with some intense spleen support.

Do You Have an Enlarged Spleen? Warning Signs and 5 TreatmentsBy Jillian Levy, CHHC
August 13, 2018
Dr. Axe on Facebook30  Dr. Axe on Twitter0  Dr. Axe on Pintrest181  Share on EmailPrint Article
Did you know you could have an enlarged spleen and not even realize it? It’s true. In fact, most people don’t experience any noticeable symptoms of an enlarged spleen at all!
Another surprise? Research shows that around 3 percent of healthy first-year college students have enlarged spleens. In some cases, people have genetically enlarged spleens, but it doesn’t affect their overall health. However, for others, it can point to problems like an underlying infection, illness or developing disorder. (1)
So what exactly is an enlarged spleen, how can you tell if you have one and how can you treat it if you do? Turns out there are natural ways to deal with this common condition.
What Is an Enlarged Spleen? As a crucial part our lymphatic system, the spleen is a vital “guardian” organ that we rely on every single day to keep the body free from infections, virus and dangerous pathogens of all kinds. An enlarged spleen, a condition called “splenomegaly,” is a clear warning sign that the immune system is fighting hard to remove threats from the body but failing to do so because it can’t keep up with high demand.
Under normal circumstances, your spleen is about the size of your fist and hardly even detectable to touch during a physical exam. However, when you’re sick or your lymphatic system is triggered for another reason, your spleen swells up and can dramatically grow in size. (2)
An enlarged spleen can sometimes be very noticeable and painful, but surprisingly most people don’t have any symptoms at all and aren’t even aware of the problem they’re experiencing! While an enlarged spleen isn’t always a health concern, it usually points to the fact that the body is trying to defend itself more than usual — and that means it’s a good idea to figure out why that is before it escalates into a bigger and more serious problem.
The Role of the SpleenThe spleen is a brown, oval-shaped organ located in the upper left side of the abdomen just below the rib cage. Part of the lymphatic system, it performs a number of important functions in the body that protect us from the effects of outside “invaders,” stress and certain deficiencies. Think of your lymphatic system like this: If your body were a city, the organs and fluids that make up the lymphatic system would be the policemen, firefighters and the garbage men.
Probably the single most important thing the spleen does is produce antibodies that fight against bacteria and other microbes. In addition, spleen function includes helping keep the blood clean, transporting and balancing fluid levels, maintaining blood platelets, and ushering waste away from muscle and joint tissue.
The spleen ultimately controls the level of circulating red blood cells within the blood, removing old and worn-out red cells that can no longer do their jobs. It also very importantly fights infections by producing phagocytes and lymphocytes, two types of protective white blood cells.
Most health problems associated with the spleen involve the spleen becoming enlarged — and when this happens, the risk for a “ruptured spleen” also goes up.  Like some of our other digestive system organs, including the liver and gallbladder, the spleen is especially vulnerable to the effects of various “toxins” or parasites entering the body, along with chemicals we take in from drugs, even some medications and prescriptions.
The spleen is prone to becoming easily overworked when liver function is poor, and surprisingly some believe the spleen is usually more likely to develop problems when your diet is “damp, cold and raw.” Traditional systems of medicine, including Ayurvedic medicine, believed that a cold or damp environment, eating too many salty or sour foods, overexerting yourself, and poor digestion all make someone more susceptible to spleen and liver damage. (3)
The results of a suffering spleen? An enlarged, malfunctioning spleen can lead to frequent infections; low energy; anemic symptoms; changes in appetite, body weight, digestion and blood flow; and more. If you want to maintain a strong immune system, avoid becoming sick, and retain muscle and joint health into older age, then you want to be careful to take good care of your entire lymphatic system, including, of course, your spleen!
SymptomsSince symptoms can sometimes be nonexistent, or at least minimal enough to not cause any concerns, an enlarged spleen is usually first discovered during a routine physical exam, catching most people by total surprise. Normally in adults, doctors can’t feel the spleen when it isn’t enlarged, so if they press below the rib cage during an exam and notice a swollen spleen, it points to the fact that something isn’t right.
In a healthy person, the normal weight and size of the spleen can vary a lot depending on factors like age, sex, body weight and body surface area. For example, studies suggest that the spleen can range from 58 grams in a 79-year-old woman to 170 grams in a 20-year-old man. An enlarged spleen that isn’t normal for someone’s body type and age can possibly signify the presence of disease, a virus, cognitive disorders or other issues (although this isn’t always the case, so don’t get alarmed just yet!).
Enlarged spleen symptoms can include:
  • indigestion or feeling uncomfortable when eating, especially after a large meal
  • spleen pain and tenderness, usually on the upper left side of the abdomen
  • pain that has spread from the abdomen to the left shoulder
  • spleen pain when taking deep breaths or moving around
  • low energy levels, possibly even chronic fatigue
  • symptoms of jaundice (including yellowing of the skin)
  • symptoms of anemia (4)
  • unexplained weight loss
  • frequent infections (such as ear, urinary tract, respiratory or sinus infections)
  • bleeding and bruising easily
Unfortunately, one of the side effects of a damaged spleen is becoming more susceptible to illnesses and feeling very fatigued. That’s because normally the spleen works as part of the body’s natural “drainage network,” producing protective white blood cells and carrying waste and bacteria away from the body. The spleen produces white blood cells that capture and destroy bacteria, dead cells and tissue, and other outside particles that make their way into the body and circulate via the bloodstream.
As blood filters through the spleen, it’s cleaned, and threatening microbes are engulfed and filtered out. Without the spleen working properly, we can’t maintain red and white blood cells we need for ongoing energy or produce enough platelets that are required for blot clotting.
CausesThe spleen can become swollen for a lot of different reasons, some more concerning than others. For example, viral infections, high alcohol intake, cirrhosis of the liver and parasitic infections are all risk factors for an enlarged spleen. Some of the ways you can prolong the health of your spleen include avoiding a poor diet high in processed foods, limiting the amount of over-the-counter or prescription drugs you take, which helps cleanse the liver, only drinking alcohol in moderation, and quitting smoking or ever using recreational drugs.
Enlarged spleen causes include:
  • Bacterial infections
  • Viruses
  • Parasites
  • Alcohol or drug use
  • Inflammation related to a diet high in chemicals, preservatives, pesticides and other toxins
  • Cancer that has spread
  • Liver disease or cirrhosis
  • Blood diseases characterized by abnormal blood cells
  • Disorders of the lymph system
  • Autoimmune reactions and disorders, such as arthritis
  • Physical trauma to the spleen or an injury (such as a sports injury)
One of the most likely causes of an enlarged spleen is an infection, since swelling in the spleen signifies an increase in white blood cells that are trying to attack something threatening. Infections that can impact the spleen include viruses like mononucleosis, parasitic infections or infections caused by bacteria.
Leishmaniasis, a type of parasitic disease found in parts of the tropics, subtropics and southern Europe, can lead to an enlarged spleen. Leishmaniasis is believed to affect about 200,000–400,000 people every year and develops after coming into contact with parasites, including infected sand flies. Symptoms can remain “silent” or can cause skin sores, ulcers, weight loss, fever and pain, in addition to swollen lymph nodes and an enlarged spleen and liver.
Other types of parasites that can lead to enlarged spleen include: malaria, toxoplasmosis,  viscera larva migrans and schistosomiasis. (5) If these are possible causes of your condition — for example, because you traveled to another continent and might have been bitten by an infected insect — your doctor will work with you to specifically treat symptoms and stabilize you before problems can worsen.
Cancer is another reason that someone can suffer spleen problems, especially leukemia (cancer of the white blood cells that take over normal healthy cells) or lymphoma (cancer of the lymph tissue). Drugs and alcohol are capable of causing problems in the spleen because they directly affect how splenic cells work. Drugs provoke severe hemolysis, which is the rupture or destruction of red blood cells. This is associated with decreased immune function and splenomegaly.
Sometimes the spleen is damaged or enlarged because of side effects or disturbances in other organs, such as the liver or other parts of the immune system. (6) For example, an enlarged spleen can develop because the liver becomes congested and overworked (resulting in liver disease in some cases), trying hard to usher toxins out the body as quickly as possible, but becoming overwhelmed in the process. (7)
How to Diagnose and Treat an Enlarged SpleenIf your doctor suspects an enlarged spleen because he or she feels something unusual during a physical, your doctor might decide to further investigate by using imaging tests, blood tests and other ways to assess how enlarged the spleen has become. Sometimes an ultrasound or computerized tomography (CT) test will be done.
If your health care provider suspects you might be infected with a parasite, your physician look for symptoms like a fever or skin rash and access blood counts (including a low red blood cell count causing anemia and low white blood cell count) since infected patients usually experience both. Your doctor will work with you to tackle the root causes of the enlarged spleen, since left unmanaged this condition can become very serious and even deadly in some cases.
Treatment options for dealing with an enlarged spleen are usually aimed at reducing any noticeable symptoms and pain, while also tackling the underlying causes like a chronic disease, diet, lifestyle, infection and so on. Only as a last resort would a doctor decide to perform surgery to remove an enlarged spleen. For most people, luckily it’s possible to remove the trigger that causes an enlarged spleen before surgery becomes necessary. (8)
Remember, the spleen is necessary and important for keeping the body guarded from disease and bacterial infections, so removing it comes with risks of its own. After surgery to remove the spleen, further down the line someone can become more prone to infections and becoming sick since removing the spleen means the body is left with one less line of defense.
Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can help protect yourself from developing or worsening an enlarged spleen.
1. Protect the Spleen from RupturingAnyone who has an enlarged spleen should be careful to avoid any type of rough contact, especially near the abdomen, since this can cause a ruptured spleen. This means avoiding contact sports (like football, basketball, wrestling, hockey, etc.) and limiting any type of physical activity where the spleen can become further damaged.
An important precaution to take is to always wear a seat belt when driving, since a car accident is likely to cause even more injury to the spleen. Remember that not every case of an enlarged spleen is problematic, so find out from your doctor first what types of activities you’re cleared to do.
2. Eat a Nutrient-Dense DietHistorically in Eastern medicine, the spleen is viewed as one of the most important organs to well-being, strength and immunity. That’s because it’s more than just a guardian and organ capable of managing blood cells — the spleen also helps turn nutrients from digested foods into useable fuel.
In Ancient Chinese Medicine and other schools of Eastern medicine, an unhealthy spleen is one of the key contributors to fatigue and anemia, and it can impact how other digestive organs work, including the colon, uterus, rectum, liver or stomach.
The best way to support your spleen and entire lymphatic and digestive systems is to eat a diet high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and essential fluids. This helps lower inflammation and fight free radical damage that can make an enlarged spleen turn into a worsened problem.
A healthy diet can benefit the entire body, including the spleen, which will work more efficiently to carry blood cells and nutrients to tissue, while also removing waste, when you obtain plenty of nutrients. A diet high in plant foods also helps provide enough hydrating water, which is important for helping the spleen rid itself and the body of excess fluids and foreign matter.
Try to avoid eating foods that place stress on your circulatory and immune systems. The more chemicals you obtain through the foods your eat, the more work your liver, spleen and other organs have to do. Foods to limit or eliminate from your diet include: common allergens (like dairy products, gluten, soy, shellfish or nightshades, for example), low-quality animal products, sugary snacks, refined vegetable oils (canola, corn, safflower, sunflower and soybean) and processed foods that contain chemical sprays or toxins.
Some of the key anti-inflammatory foods to load up on include:
  • green leafy vegetables
  • brightly colored fruits and veggies of all kinds, including cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, etc.) and berries
  • lean proteins, especially omega-3 foods like salmon and wild seafood
  • nuts and seeds (chia, flax, hemp, pumpkin, etc.)
  • unrefined oils like extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil
  • herbs, condiments and spices (ginger, capsicum, molasses, turmeric, garlic, for example)
3. Move Your BodyDrainage of the lymphatic system depends heavily on you moving your body regularly. While lymph fluid can move through the lymph nodes and spleen somewhat on its own thanks to gravity and blood circulation, you’re much more prone to illness and swelling when you’re stagnant. Regularly exercising benefits your spleen because it helps keep blood flowing and fluids moving through your body. This is important considering the spleen is responsible for the filtering and transformation of particles within lymph fluids. (9)
Exercise increases blood flow to your digestive organs and engages muscles in your digestive tract, so once the spleen and liver do their jobs to clean the body, more movement further helps usher out waste. Following exercise with foam rolling, massage therapy or infrared sauna treatments is also beneficial for supporting the lymphatic system and helping with detoxification.
4. Reduce StressYour lymphatic, immune and digestive systems are all vulnerable to the effects of stress. Your brain communicates with organs around your entire body, and every time it suspects that you’re in a threatening situation, hormones are altered that affect your body’s ability to defend itself from threats.
Chronic stress can weaken the immune system and cause inflammation, digestive problems like irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers and much more. (10) To help combat high amounts of stress, make it a priority to try relaxing exercises like being more active, doing hobbies you love, spending time in nature, taking warm baths, breathing exercises and so on.
5. Try Supplements that Support LymphaticSeveral essential oils are beneficial for improving the body’s ability to drain swelling, fight infections, increase blood flow and reduce pain. Essential oils that are useful for targeting swelling in the lymph nodes include lemon, myrrh, oregano, cypress and frankincense oils.
Combine several drops with a carrier oil like jojoba or coconut oil, and massage them over the spleen two to three times per day. Other supplements that can help improve liver health, circulation and fight inflammation include: omega-3 fish oils, turmeric, burdock root, digestive enzymes, activated charcoal and milk thistle.
